Colorful & Classic

My latest design is for a wonderful family in Cincinnati looking to make their living room a finished and comfortable space that reflects her love for vibrant color and eclectic pieces and his preference for traditional and clutter free style.

Their criteria? Functional pieces that are easily moveable and can double as extra seating when necessary. Oh - and more light. Definitely need more light.

My client's example of what item in her home makes her most happy? The kids foam letter mat. I mean, what's not to love? It's comfortable, colorful and evokes playfulness!
Here's the space today . . .

And here are the details behind the plan:
  • We decided on Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams to provide a neutral backdrop to all the color we'll infuse. The back of the bookcases will be painted in a deeper/ darker gray.
  • The traditional, linen slipcovered sofa will be layered with colorful throw pillows. Again, slipcovers are key for anyone with little ones running around and the neutral sofa will allow my client to switch out accent colors over time.
  • The two yellow patterned ottomans will set in front of the fireplace. They can be used as additional seating, side tables, or ottomans to kick your feet up. They're functional, vibrant, super affordable and will not obstruct the view of the fireplace.
  • The round coffee table is kid friendly and a happy medium of traditional (color and shape) and eclectic.
  • The TV console is classic, warm toned and provides ample storage for electronics.
  • The metallic garden stool will be used as an end table, but like the ottomans can double as a seat when entertaining.
  • The traditional pendant is to be centered above the coffee table for much needed light in the middle of the room.
  • The circle mirrors will go above the fireplace mantel and the bookcases will be adorned with fun and vibrant decor, art and family photos.
  • The console table will go on the wall where the tall lamp is currently placed.
I also provided the same plan, but with a patterned rug that would be softer for the kiddos and add even more color to the room.
Which option do you prefer?

PS. Remember how I mentioned that small redesigns typically lead to larger renovations? Well, that's exactly the case with this space. Once the design plan was complete my clients began considering knocking out the wall between the living room and dining room (the wall with the tall lamp), and also re-doing the fireplace surround. If that happens, you will definitely see a few tweaks to this plan. I'll keep you posted!
